It is just 170kms from Nainital. However, bear in mind that the way to Chaukori is hilly so travel only during the day. You can keep 1.5 days from your Nainital trip to experience Chaukori. Patal Bhuvneshwar is a cave temple in the village of Bhubhaneshwar. It is only about 170kms from Nainital. Even if you are not a religious person, do consider stopping by. Apart from its religious significance, it is also a marvel of natural architecture. To enter the temple, you have to vertically slide down the cave. The entire temple is then under the ground, in the cave.

Any construction to build stairs is strictly prohibited. Hence, it has been left as it is. It is famous as the temple of Lord Shiva. However, it is also believed that 33 Hindu gods reside in the cave. Thus, it is a place of immense religious significance.

Since it is so close to Nainital, you can go there in the morning and drive back in the evening after having explored it. However, keep in mind that it is not a very off-the-grid place. People often compare its beauty to that of Kashmir. By the river, you can hear the water flowing by and occasionally hitting rocks. Around you, there is a blend of lush green and snow-white mountains. Apart from its natural beauty, it also holds a lot of historical and mythological significance.
